YaleWomen Webinar Lean In for Compensation: Salary Negotiation

“I asked: ‘Why did a man and woman earn different salaries?’ He said: ‘I made the same offer. He negotiated; she accepted.’”
Donna Dubinsky ’77, speaking at YaleWomen’s 2013 inaugural conference, “Vision, Values, Voice: Women Changing a Changing World.”

Typically, women working full time in nearly every occupation in the United States are paid just 80% of what men are paid. For women of color and for mothers, the pay gap is even wider. (Source: http://www.aauw.org/research/the-simple-truth-about-the-gender-pay-gap/)

Research shows that women are much less likely than men to negotiate their salaries, compounding earnings differentials throughout their careers. In this one-hour webinar, you will learn specific strategies for negotiating salary and other job benefits, including job title and workplace flexibility. You will increase your negotiating skills by observing a mock negotiation.

Deb Ellis brings her broad experience and expertise as a teacher, women’s rights lawyer, and law school career counselor to this webinar. During her career, Deb has served as Assistant Dean for Public Service at NYU School of Law, Legal Director of the ACLU-NJ, Legal Director of NOW Legal Defense Fund, adjunct professor at Yale College and NYU School of Law, and Executive Director of the NJ Coalition to End Homelessness. Deb currently serves as Director of Operations of NJ LEEP, which helps students graduate from high school, attend and graduate from competitive colleges, and begin careers. Deb has spoken and published widely on public interest legal careers and on women’s rights, and has received several awards for her leadership in social justice, including a 2011 White House Champion of Change Award.

Deb will engage us in a discussion of topics, including:

  • Gender differences and how they affect how women think about negotiating, whether they negotiate, and how they negotiate
  • The concept of negotiation, and how to make it a win-win experience
  • The implications of the differentials in salary and other benefits throughout a woman’s career

You will be able to ask questions during the webinar via chat, get advice and gain a better understanding of what is available to you during the negotiating process. You can submit questions in advance by writing to [email protected] before Friday, June 9th.
